Do Lifestyle Bloggers HAVE TO Have a Niche?

When it comes to blogging, there are a million questions that can be asked.  When it comes to actually starting a blog and creating content for it…you guessed it.  There goes a million more questions!

However, there is one question that I see a lot.  Like, seriously, I see this question in our community almost everyday.

The question is:  Do I need a niche for my blog?  *alarm sounds*

There are so many different, great blogs out there now.  Some are extremely specific when it comes to a niche and others, not so much.  It can be so easy to compare yourself to the top performers/your favorites that it all gets confusing figuring out what you “should be doing”.  Been there.

How many different niches are there anyway?

You have:

  • Fashion
  • Beauty
  • Technology
  • Finance
  • DIY
  • Home improvements/renovations
  • Mommy blogs
  • Career
  • Gaming
  • Lifestyle

The list goes on and on.  Some people are lucky to have that one passion that they want to blog about.  They build their blog around that passion and attract that particular crowd.

What if you don’t have just one passion or interest that you want to blog about?  Spoiler alert: it’s not the end of the world and you can still be very successful. That’s where lifestyle blogging comes in.

You can be a lifestyle blogger and blog about a variety of topics, but you have to be careful.

THE Niche Tip

First and foremost, you have to ask yourself why you started your blog in the first place.  If you just needed a creative outlet only, this doesn’t apply to you at all. However, if you created your blog to potentially make money from it, you are not safe so settle in.

Do you need a specific niche to blog as a lifestyle blogger?

No.  But it is highly recommended (yes, by me) that you stick to not a niche, but a specific audience.  Let me explain.

Stick to Your Audience

Using me as an example, I blog about general lifestyle topics for women.  These will mostly be fashion, beauty, and life topics. All different niches, but only a certain audience will relate to my content.  For example, a post about a new line of lip gloss won’t excite a guy that wants to read about…Fortnite. If I made a post about how to play a certain level of Fortnite, after the guy reads that post, will he want to subscribe?  Probably not since the rest of my content has nothing to do with that topic.

If I knew how to do DIY projects, I could blog about that as a lifestyle blogger.  But I don’t know how (haha) but if I did, the trick would be to tailor that to fit my current audience.  For example, a post like “How to Create a Makeup Vanity for Under $100” would be my ideal go-to.  This gets you out of the niche requirement, but still keeps you focused on a particular audience. And that is what we want!

Is That It?

It’s that simple and I am all about simple!  You have a much better chance of working with brands as a lifestyle blogger when your audience is more detailed and similar to theirs.  Not only is it good for your blog as a business itself, but it cuts down on the stress for you because you can stick to the crowd that you know.

These are some helpful tips! I don’t blog about one niche but all my topics are targeted at one audience so it makes sense.

I would definitely have a hard time just sticking to one. It was torture trying to come up with the perfect niche. I was so thankful when I saw that you can blog about a range of things but tie it all together. Thank you for reading!

I like your tip as a newer blogger. I am a lifestyle blog that includes content about books/book reviews and health topics. So, I have topics that can be monetized.

That’s a great niche. Do you read Stephen King books? I know he has a new book coming out soon that I have to have.

I agree with you, although I have seen very successful blogs where they wrote about 3 totally different things with no relation to the other whatsoever. HOWEVER! I strongly believe that it’s going to be a lot harder to bring in money if that is the goal.

I totally agree! It takes a lot more work and creativity to really gain that specific audience with more than one topic present. Thank you for reading!

You’re welcome!! And yes, it really is. That was honestly the most difficult thing for me to come to terms with when I started my blog…besides picking a name of course. Thank you for reading!

It’s definitely tricky when you want to venture outside your niche! I don’t think I’d want 3 different blogs though so I’ll just stick to one topic for now.

It is so tricky! I always wondered how people manage to have multiple blogs and stay sane. I love guest blogging for that purpose for sure. Thank you for reading!
