When was the last time that you had a weekend getaway? And when I say getaway, I mean a relaxing, good time where you forget about everything going on back home? If it’s been a long time, you may want to look at your calendar and make some plans! And you don’t have to go far at all. If you’re not into traveling right now, a staycation is a great alternative option. That is exactly what we decided to do over the weekend in Downtown Dallas and let me tell you, I needed this weekend staycation more than I thought!

But enough about that. I’m going to share with you exactly how the weekend went just in case you’re planning staycation or even vacation in Downtown Dallas. But first, let’s discuss some basics.
What Does a Staycation Even Mean?
Simply put, the dictionary defines staycation as “a vacation spent at home or nearby”. Lots of people say the media recently made this word up because you may have been seeing it EVERYWHERE in the past few years, but that’s not actually true. Fun fact, recent research shows that the current earliest written use for the word was found to be in July of 1944 in a full-page beer ad. Interesting, huh? At least I thought it was!
Why or When Should You Go On a Staycation?
There are lots of signs that should point you in the direction of scheduling a staycation. I’ll list a few of my personal “indicators”. If you can relate to any of these, a staycation may be just what you need to refresh:
- You’re more stressed than normal. I mean, any little thing just sets you off!
- You’ve been cooped up inside for longer than you can remember (this one is especially for my work from home peeps)
- You haven’t been inspired lately and/or lacking general motivation to do everyday things that bring you joy
- You’ve just been wanting to get away and need a quick option!
More than often, these feelings may pop up and what can you do about it? It’s life, right? Sometimes, getting out into a different environment and viewing different scenery can work wonders, even if it is just in your city. The goal here is to shake up monotonous habits and get some excitement flowing.

Staycation at Hyatt Regency Dallas
Upon check-in, it was obvious that the Hyatt Regency Dallas was a great choice. We had the two queen beds room on the 16th floor and it was super cozy with an awesome view. Plus, the service was awesome so win, win! If you have never had a stay here before, I recommend setting aside a little extra cash for valet parking. Self parking is always an option but it was a little farther to walk and a little convenience never hurt, right? In general, I also highly recommend a two night stay for staycations if you would like to explore one day and relax the next because time flies!

Roaming Downtown Dallas
There’s no way that I could ever stay Downtown and not explore! The weather was beyond beautiful so we just decided to walk around and sightsee. Later that night, we finally tried yummy beignets from Le Bon Temps (I called them yummy for a reason) and had dinner at Marlowe MXM (full video of what we ordered here) down the street. Overall, there was a lot of walking, which I actually prefer to do when sightseeing. And you never know what you’re going to see Downtown so that’s a plus.
So take this as your sign. Go ahead and book that staycation!

It’s always fun to have a staycation and see your home city from a different point of view. I’ve done that a few times in Chicago (where I’m based) and I always find it refreshing.
