Kayaking in Dallas for the First Time

This summer has been all about trying new, fun adventures for me.  Kayaking is something that I’ve always wanted to do so when my friends showed me one of the kayaking places in Dallas, I was all in!  Cue the bathing suit and sunscreen.

Where to Go Kayaking in Dallas

We kayaked with SUP NTX in the Las Colinas – Irving, Texas area.  They offer 1 and 2 hour single and tandem kayak rentals as well as paddle board rentals.  You can even book private or group paddle board 2 hour lessons.

They provided free life jackets, storage for personal items, waterproof fanny packs, and bottled water.  Although I was nervous for my first time, the service was really welcoming and made me feel more comfortable.

First Time Kayaking Tips

Since it was my first time kayaking, I opted for a tandem kayak.  They recommended that we put the more experienced in back so I was placed in the front.

I wore sandals but I suggest a pair of water shoes since my sandals were sliding all over the place.  They’re much less distracting and this pair from Amazon comes with a waterproof phone lanyard.  The clothing to wear is entirely up to you.  I saw plenty of people wearing bathing suits.  I wore my bathing suit with swimming shorts since we were going to the waterpark afterwards.  But I also saw people wearing t-shirts and shorts so it’s all fair game.

Must Haves for Kayaking

Definitely be prepared for lots of arm movement (more like an upper body workout).  And be patient with yourself as you get used to the rowing motions because it took more than a few times for me to get the hang of it.  Bonus tip:  I’ve also read that as a beginner, it’s best to avoid kayaking on a windy day.  If you would like a more guided kayaking tour or lessons, Discover Kayak in Grapevine looks like an excellent option.

I’m so excited to share more adventures!  Have you ever been kayaking?  If so, what do you wish you would have known for your first time?
